In 2021, fossil fuels were the source of 82% of primary energy globally.

Primary energy grew by 31 Exajoule (EJ) in 2021, the largest increase in history and reversing the sharp decline in 2020. China alone saw a  10 EJ increase in the demand for primary energy.

Renewable primary energy grew faster than any other fuel (including biofuels but excluding hydro) in 2021. It increased by around 5.1 EJ in 2021, a 15% YoY increase.

Solar and wind capacity continued to grow rapidly in 2021, increasing by 226 GW. For the first time, their share in power generation reached 10.2% as they surpassed the contribution of nuclear energy.

China remained the main driver of solar and wind capacity growth last year, accounting for about 36% and 40% of the global capacity additions, respectively.
