The World Press Freedom Index 2021 ranks 180 countries and regions according to the levels of freedom available to journalists. It provides an overview of the freedoms available to the media based on pluralism, independence of the media, quality of legislative framework and safety of journalists in a country or a region.
Norway remains at the top for the fifth year in a row, followed by Finland. Germany came down from 11th spot to 13th spot and has been reclassified as "fairly good" and the United States was placed at the 44th spot. Brazil (111) and Russia (150) share the "bad" classification with India, placed at 142.
China continues to be at the 177th spot with internet censorship, surveillance and propaganda at unprecedented levels.
