The Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Index 2021 measures the status of women's empowerment around the world.
The index captures and quantifies three dimensions of women’s inclusion (economic, social and political). The overall WPS score has improved 9% since 2017, with an improvement of more than 5% in 90 countries.
More
recently, the pandemic has dealt a blow to women's inclusion. It has
forced many women out of the workforce. Among people who lost their jobs, 9
in 10 women became economically inactive, most of them young, urban, and
less educated, compared with 7 in 10 men.
Norway
was at the top of the 2021 index. The top 12 countries were all
developed countries, with Afghanistan at the bottom with Syria and
Yemen. Of the bottom 12 countries, 10 are classified by the World Bank
as fragile states.
Major
democracies like India and the U.S were placed at the 148th and the 21st
spot, respectively. The state performance varied greatly in the U.S,
with 6 northeast states in the top 10; while all 5 of the worst-performing
states were in the southeast.
