The quality of roads determines the effectiveness of transportation of goods across a country. Better roads promote economic activities, reduce poverty and are an important contributor to sustainable and inclusive economic development.

The calculations use 'Google Maps' to measure road quality in 162 countries. The mean speed is determined by the sum of road distances between large cities (at least 80 kilometres apart) divided by the travel time—both retrieved from Google Maps.

Developed economies like the United States, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Canada generally have the fastest roads, and emerging economies generally have slower road traffic.
