In 2021, Pfizer was the top pharma company with prescription drug sales of $72 billion. $37 billion of Pfizer's sales were generated from the COVID vaccine 'Comirnaty' alone. Pfizer saw an increase in Rx sales of 102% in a year.
AbbVie moved to the second spot with a healthy growth of $11 billion in pharma sales and reached $55 billion in overall sales in 2021. Anti-inflammation drug 'Humira' was its top-selling drug with $21 billion in sales.
Many pharma companies saw a surge in sales due to the pandemic - AstraZeneca's vaccine 'Vaxzevria' reached $4 billion in sales last year, helping the company to a 41.5% increase in Rx sales and two spots up to No. 9.
Gilead Sciences advanced one spot to No.12 (and a spike of 13.4%) behind its antiviral drug 'Veklury' (remdesivir), which recorded $5.6 billion in revenue.
Johnson & Johnson generated $49.8 billion in 2021 Rx sales, placing it fourth on the list, with an increase of 15.5% overall YoY sales.
