According to RSF, “Press freedom is defined as the ability of journalists as individuals and collectives to select, produce, and disseminate news in the public interest independent of political, economic, legal, and social interference and the absence of threats to their physical and mental safety.”
It provides an overview of the freedoms available to the media based on five contextual indicators: political context, legal framework, economic context, socio-cultural context and safety.
All five-factors are then rated on a scale of 0-100, with all indicators weighing equally.
Norway, Denmark and Sweden continue to hold the top positions in the 2022 index.
Media polarisation is continuing to stoke internal divisions in major democratic countries like the United States (42), France (26) and India (150).
The situation remains "very bad" for press freedom in 28 countries like Russia (155), Belarus (153), China (175), Turkmenistan (177), Iran (178), Eritrea (179) and North Korea (180).
(Situation in the index is based on the data collected between Jan-Dec 2021)
