The global airline passengers increased by 25% in 2021 vs 2020 and reached close to 4.5 billion. The passenger levels are still 50% less when compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic).

Passenger traffic at the top 10 busiest airports, representing collectively almost 10% of global traffic (463 million passengers), witnessed a gain of 51.8% from 2020, or a drop of 29.1% compared to 2019.

The top 8 airports in terms of passenger traffic were in the USA, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at the top with 75.7 million passengers, followed by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at second spot with 62.5 million passengers.

The impact of the pandemic on air cargo was relatively less, as the cargo volume increased 15% (+3.5% vs 2019), to an estimated record 124 million tonnes in 2021.

Hong Kong International Airport was at the top with 5.0 million tonnes of cargo volume, followed by Memphis International Airport at 4.5 million tonnes of cargo.
