Close to $1.8 billion were stolen in the form of cryptocurrencies in 2021. 7 of the 10 attacks targeted DeFi (Decentralized finance) platforms in particular.

The overall cryptocurrency-based crime reached an all-time high with illicit addresses receiving $14 billion in 2021, up from $7.8 billion in 2020. These include Ransomware, darknet market, malware, terrorism financing and fraud shops.

According to Chainalysis, cryptocurrency usage is growing at an exponential rate, the total transaction volume of cryptocurrencies stood at $15.8 trillion in 2021, up 567% from 2020. The overall illicit transactions related to Cryptocurrencies only represented 0.15% of total cryptocurrency transaction volume in 2021.
