TomTom’s 2021 Traffic Index analyses traffic congestion levels in 404 cities across 58 countries.

Istanbul (Turkey) was the most congested city in 2021, with an average 62% congestion rate. This means that a 30-minute trip will take 62% more time than it would during Istanbuls’s uncongested conditions.

Moscow (Russia) was the most congested city in 2020, but it was at the second spot in 2021, with 54% congestion levels.

Overall, global congestion levels are 10% lower than they were in 2019. Even during the rush hours, the global congestion levels were 19% lower in 2021 when compared to 2019.

(Time lost per year = Extra travel time as compared to a one-hour period during free-flow conditions, multiplied by 230 working days per year)
