The pandemic had no major impact on the sales of electric cars. The sales of electric cars doubled in 2021, from 3 million in 2020 to 6.6 million in 2021. The market share of electric cars in terms of sales reached 8.5% in 2021 from 4.1% in 2020.
There are now around 16 million electric cars on the road worldwide, which corresponds to 30 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity consumption per year (equivalent to all electricity generated in Ireland).
China is a global leader in electric car sales. The sales of electric cars nearly tripled to 3.4 million in 2021. More electric cars were sold in China in 2021 than in the entire world in 2020.
The growth in electric cars is mostly restricted to China, Europe and the USA, as they account for roughly two-thirds of the overall car market and around 90% of electric car sales. In large developing economies such as Brazil, India and Indonesia, the share is still below 1% without any significant increase over the past year.
