The number of people living in poverty ($2 or less a day) is projected to have increased by 75 million due to the recession in 2020 (earlier projections of 59 million to 134 million). This accounts for nearly 60% of the global increase in poverty.

These estimates provided by "Pew Research" suggests that the middle class in India might have shrunk by 32 million in 2020.

This is a serious blow to the efforts of reducing poverty levels in India, as the number of poor in India between the years 2011 and 2019 is estimated to have decreased from 340 million to 78 million.
(The term "post-pandemic" refers to the period since the onset of the pandemic in January 2020).
