The new "Record App
Activity" feature introduced in iOS 15.2 lets the user see the
networks/domains contacted by the apps installed on the phone.
A
recent study using the "Record App Activity" by URL Genius shows that
installed apps not only communicate with their own domain, but more
often they contact third-party domains. It is not clear at the moment
what data is being shared.
The
study looked at 200 popular apps from 20 different categories. The
research found out that on average an app contacts 15 domains, with 12
of those being unfamiliar third-party domains (roughly 80%).
These
third-party connections occur even after the users 'opt-out' of
behavioural tracking, which raises concern about unauthorised data
collection and user tracking.
