Urban
populations have been rising sharply over the past 50 years. China saw
the most increase in its urban population share, followed by India.
Over the past 50 years, the share of the world’s population living in urban areas has risen from 37% to 56%, an increase of three billion people.
China added 700 million people to its urban population in the last 50 years, its urban population rose from 17% to 61% between 1970 and 2020.
India comes in at the second spot with an addition of 370 million people to its urban population over the past 50 years.
The demographic shift from rural to urban areas is set to continue, with the share of the urban population at the global level expected to reach 68% by 2050, before plateauing thereafter.
While income is a primary driver of urban populations; urban growth potentially has impacts on economic growth through agglomeration effects. For example, all advanced economies have a high share of urban populations.
