The State of Pet Homelessness Index measures the homeless/stray population of cats and dogs across 9 countries.

Every country receives an index score between 0 and 10 (where 10 = no pet homelessness exists) based on data collected across three focus areas i.e:
1) Stray populations and responsible breeding
2) Pet adoption and access to care
3) Pet ownership barriers and policies

This is the first-ever index measuring pet homelessness (developed by MARS INC). It estimates that there are 22 million homeless cats and dogs in 9 countries i.e: the US, UK, India, Mexico, Germany, Russia, South Africa, China, and Greece.

There is an increase in the number of owners abandoning their pets during the pandemic due to their fears about the virus and financial issues.

The Index data also suggests that across the nine countries measured, nearly half (47%) of pet owners have concerns that when life returns to normal post-pandemic, there will be more homeless pets than ever.
