The number of international students enrolled at American universities dropped by 15% in the 2020/21 academic year due to the pandemic. About 914,095 international students pursued higher education at U.S. colleges and universities.

710,000 international students were enrolled at the undergraduate, graduate, non-degree levels and more than 200,000 international students pursued OPT (Optional Practical Training).

These students represented 5% of all students in U.S. higher education and, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, contributed $39 billion to the U.S. economy in 2020.

About 54% of the international students pursued their major in STEM fields. Engineering continued to be the most popular major, with 21% of international students pursuing it.
