In 2021, an estimated 952.8 million email accounts were exposed due to data breaches. An increase of 3.4% when compared to 2020. This included many online platforms like Clubhouse, Facebook and Raychat.

It means that nearly 1 billion email accounts have been exposed in both 2020 and 2021 each. Users in the U.S. saw the largest number of breaches at 212.4 million followed by Iran at 156 million. Iran also saw the sharpest rise in the number of account breaches, a 10842% rise from 2020, largely attributed to the 2021 Raychat breach.

Sudan saw the second-highest rise in breaches with 9.2 million cases in 2021 compared to 214.6K in 2020 (4178% increase). The United Arab Emirates stood at third with a 515% increase (1.5m in 2020 to 9m in 2021), followed by Iraq with a 456% increase Y-o-Y.

In India, a total of 86.6 million user accounts were compromised in 2021, an increase of 352% from 2020. This includes Domino’s India and Air India cases.
