China is the king of surveillance. At the end of 2021, an estimate by IHS Markit puts the number of installed surveillance cameras globally at over a billion, and more than 50% of it in China. An analysis by Compatitech shows that around 540 million cameras were installed in China, which equates to an average of 372.8 cameras per 1,000 people. Densely populated cities like Shenzhen could have at least 6,220 cameras per square mile, followed by Wuhan with 5,429, and Shanghai with 4,323 per square mile. Indore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Singapore, Moscow, Baghdad, London, St. Petersburg, and Los Angeles are the 10 most surveilled cities outside China.
