Close to 635 million students worldwide remain affected by school closures and interruptions. According to a projection, the students risk losing $17 trillion in lifetime earnings in present value, or about 14%of today’s global GDP.

Moreover, learning poverty (the inability to read and understand a simple text by age 10) in low and middle-income countries could potentially reach 70% due to the prolonged school closures and the ineffective remote teaching/learning tools.

Students in countries like Brazil, Pakistan,India, South Africa, and Mexico, among others, show substantial losses in math and reading abilities due to the extended school closures.

According to UNICEF:-

“A growing body of evidence shows that COVID-19 has caused high rates of anxiety and depression among children and young people, with some studies finding that girls, adolescents and those living in rural areas are most likely to experience these problems."

Reopening schools with properly vaccinated students and staff must remain a top priority globally to stem and reverse learning losses, especially in low and lower-middle income countries that are unprepared to deploy remote learning during emergency school closure.
